Someone Tonight Gets to Be Better Than The Super Bowl Champions For a Week

Tonight, the 49ers and Rams are competing to see who will disappoint fans in California. For at least one week, one of these teams will be on top of the NFC West with a division win. The 49ers lead the series 79-72-3. The Rams won four of the last five meetings. Eager to add another ring to their collection, the Rams returned Aaron Donald to the mix to scare NFL offenses. Stafford’s shocking season of coming off an MVP run has him in the front of a Hall of Fame career. It seems like the Rams have accomplished just about all they can and yet they still keep going.

The 49ers have one question. Can they stay healthy? McCaffrey and Purdy are question marks in that category. However, if they can maintain a healthy status throughout the season, they can be a problem that will annoy the NFC altogether.

There is little doubt about what these two teams can do. There is more than enough doubt about what either team will do, however. The Rams seem to be too eager to buy a championship into their favor. Historically, that has had some examples of success such as the 2007 Patriots, 2015 Carolina Panthers,  and the 2024 Eagles. But there are other examples of setbacks when teams have tried that approach. It’s an error that the Dallas Cowboys have traditionally implemented.

While it may seem exciting to fall in love with statistics and big names, it is a risk. It is hard to see a situation where the 49ers are strong enough to handle the star power of the Rams early in the season. While the Rams may likely get to a Dallas Cowboys style start, it does seem like they may also be in danger of a potential Dallas Cowboys style finish to the season.

The 49ers are not without being a threat though too. Christian McCaffrey is elite when healthy. They seem to have cleansed themselves from distractions. Dre Greenlaw wants to have a return to San Francisco similar to Kevin Greene’s 1998 return to the Carolina Panthers. Ready to team with Fred Warner, the 49ers can recreate a Super Bowl ready defense that may shine throughout the year. But did they do enough to keep up with the Seahawks and Rams? While the 49ers would be a sure division champion throughout most of the other divisions in the NFL, the NFC West is chaotic. One of these teams will have a season opener they do not want. And we all want to experience it.
