I’m not one to accuse the NFL of being racist. But after thirty years of rest, and winning them enough Super Bowls to buy a soul from the devil, Bill Romanowski, the 49ers are going to start Brock Purdy as if he could ever win an NFC Championship for them. Newsflash. He can’t. He’s too young and not Steve Young enough even if he’s not Bryce Young. And one day, he will be too old and not young enough to remember his own name.

I mean, just listen to what Joe Montana has to say about Brock Purdy (which is what you name a Colts quarterback, not a 49ers quarterback). Joe Montana said that Brock Purdy does not buckle under pressure and that his demeanor never changes. He said that to compliment Brock Purdy for displaying leadership. It’s more than not showing negativity. It is about being the same person no matter what the situation is. In complimenting Brock Purdy, Joe Montana is using him as an example  to display greatness by consistency in his attitude.

That characteristic is not just displayed by Brock Purdy. 49ers running back, Christian McCaffrey, was awarded the Bart Starr Award this year, an honor given to a player for exemplifying leadership and integrity in his work.

The 49ers are a team that is easy to overlook in a division featuring the Rams and Seahawks. But they are a fierce opponent when they are healthy. And boy are they healthy with the Season opening against the Rams. San Francisco will need their poise and all the intangible characteristics complimented about Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey if this team is going to win. They cannot depend on talent alone. In other words, they need to be more disciplined than they ever could imagine themselves to be during the Frank Gore/Patrick Willis era.

It is not about the talent. They have talent. They need the tenacity that has already been displayed in years past if the 49ers are going to even sniff a return at the playoffs. They cannot win by being a rival. They have to be a revival or this season will never work for them.
